Healthy soft drink alternatives in NZ

3 min read Fiona
Sidekick as a soft drink alternative outdoors

If you are looking for healthy soft drink alternatives in NZ, you are usually standing in front of a fridge with four different “better” options and no clear job for each.

This guide is the short map: what each drink is for, what it tastes like, and where a honey-sweetened soda sits — without medical claims or wellness theatre.

What people usually mean by “healthy soft drink”

In New Zealand search and café menus, “healthy soft drink” usually means one of these:

1. Less cane sugar than a classic cola 2. No stevia (or less of a stevia aftertaste) 3. Something that still tastes like a treat 4. Something that is not alcohol

Those jobs are not the same. One drink cannot win all four for everyone.

Diet soda

Job: near-zero sugar fizz. Trade-off: sweeteners (often stevia, sucralose, aspartame) and a finish many people dislike. Choose it if: sugar grams are the only filter that matters.

Sidekick is not a diet soda. It is sweetened with New Zealand honey and made with real fruit. There is sugar in the can. Read the panel.

Kombucha

Job: fermented tang, often sold as a daily wellness habit. Trade-off: vinegar-forward, not soda-sweet; flavour varies wildly by brand. Choose it if: you want that fermented profile on purpose.

Sidekick is not kombucha. A splash of apple cider vinegar keeps our finish bright; it is still a fruit soda.

Prebiotic / fibre sodas

Job: “functional” soft drinks built around fibre or gut-marketing claims. Trade-off: often stevia-forward; taste is secondary to the claim. Choose it if: the functional label is why you buy.

Sidekick does not compete on fibre claims. We compete on taste: fruit, honey, bubbles.

Honey soda (Sidekick’s slot)

Job: a soft drink you finish — fruit first, New Zealand honey for sweetness, a splash of apple cider vinegar for brightness. No cane sugar. No stevia. No erythritol. Trade-off: not zero sugar; not vegan (honey). Choose it if: you want soda, not a diet product or a ferment.
