DOC camps on the South Island do not need a café map. They need a chilly bin that survives the drive, and a clear rule: water on the track, the can for after.
Sidekick is a honey-sweetened soda from Wānaka in 250ml cans. Real fruit, New Zealand honey, no cane sugar, no stevia. Cans chill fast and stack. Glass does not belong in a slurry.
Before you leave town: Mango 12-pack for a short trip, or Fridge Fill if you are stocking home base and the cooler from the same order.
What goes in the cooler
Ice to the rim
Sidekick cans — Mango for summer, Cherry if that is the house favourite
Water bottles or a bladder for the tramp
Food. Not a second soft-drink brand fighting for space
Labels up so you can grab without digging. Keep empties in a bag for the bin or the scrap stream at home — do not leave cans at the camp.
Trail version of the same rule: How to pack a trail can. Hiking drink context: What to drink hiking in New Zealand.
How many cans
| Nights | People | Rough cans | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 2 | 4–6 | Part of a 12-pack |
| 2–3 | 4 | 8–12 | One 12-pack |
| Week + home after | Household | 24–36 | Fridge Fill |
One can after the swim or the walk is enough. Two if it is hot and you are back at camp. Do not drink soda as hydration on the track.
Buy in town, then drive
Hometown and the next valley are where we name fridges — useful if you forgot the box:
Where to drink Sidekick in Wānaka
Where to drink Sidekick in Queenstown
For the rest of the island — Abel Tasman, Milford approaches, inland camps — pack from Wānaka, Queenstown, or a Fridge Fill shipped before you leave home. Wider trip map: Honey soda for a South Island trip.
What this is not
Not a DOC booking guide. Not a list of every campground fridge. Not a claim that soda belongs in your daypack instead of water.
