Best views in Queenstown

Sidekick on a New Zealand mountain ridge

Sidekick is from Wānaka. Queenstown is the next valley over. These are the views if you are in town for a day: one full-day peak, one town hill, the gondola ridge, and the lake you can walk to.

This is not a café list. Tracks change with weather, ice, and private land. Check DOC before you go.

Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond Track is the full-day one. From Queenstown via the Tiki Trail (Brecon Street, beside the Skyline base): about 14 km return, 1,438 m of climb, summit at 1,748 m. Six to eight hours. The peak is only halfway.

At the saddle (1,326 m) the view already opens over Lake Whakatipu and the Remarkables. Beyond the saddle the track crosses private land, gets steeper, and is unmaintained. Alpine weather. Carry water. Start early.

You can cut the forest climb by riding the gondola to Bob’s Peak, then walking to the saddle or the summit. That is shorter, not easy.

Queenstown Hill / Te Tapunui

The town walk. Queenstown Hill Time Walk is about 5.4 km return, two to three hours, from Belfast Terrace. Council track, private land — stay on it.

The Basket of Dreams sculpture sits on the loop before the last climb. The summit is 360 degrees: the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Frankton Arm, Queenstown Bay. This is the view if you do not have a whole day.

Bob’s Peak

The gondola ridge. Skyline sits on Bob’s Peak above town — pine forest, then the deck everyone photographs. You can walk the Tiki Trail up (steep, about an hour) or ride. The view is Queenstown Bay and the Remarkables without a summit scramble.

The can is for after, in town — not for leaving on the deck.

The lake from town

Marine Parade, the beach by the old Coronation Bathhouse, and the Frankton Track toward Kelvin Heights. Water, mountains, boats. No car park lottery. The same lakefront as The Bathhouse if you want the drink with the view.

After the walk

Water on the hill. A honey-sweetened soda when you are back.
