A weekend in Wānaka

Sidekick Soda on a Southern Alps track near Wānaka

Sidekick is a New Zealand honey soda, family owned and run from Wānaka. If you flew into Queenstown and drove the Crown Range — Kiwi long weekend or Aussie lakes trip — this is hometown. Real fruit, New Zealand honey, a splash of apple cider vinegar. No cane sugar. No stevia. No erythritol. The can here is the one you want in the fridge when you get home.

This is not a café ranking. It is how a weekend here actually goes: a walk, a can in town, a fridge if you have a kitchen.

Getting here

Queenstown Airport is the usual fly-in. Wānaka is the next valley — about an hour over the Crown Range in good weather, longer in ice and snow. Check the road. The Queenstown drink list starts at Airspresso in domestic departures if you want a can before you even hire the car.

Kiwis coming down by road usually arrive via Cromwell and the lake. Buy in town when you get here, or shop a 12-pack to an address that takes parcels. Do not count on a fridge at every Airbnb.

A walk that fits the day

Best views in Wānaka is the track note. Short version:

Mount Iron if you have an hour and a half. Town walk. Lake Wānaka, Lake Hāwea, the valleys.

Roys Peak if you have a full day, a weather window, and more water than you think. Closed 1 October to 10 November for lambing. Private farmland. Dogs not allowed. Check DOC.

The lake from town if you do not want a climb. Waterfall Creek toward Glendhu. No car park lottery.

Soda is not hydration. How to pack a trail can: water on the hill, can after, pack the empty out.

The can in town

Named stockists sit on Where to drink Sidekick in Wānaka: Corner Peak Coffee in Three Parks, Edgewater on the lake, Muttonbird off Ardmore Street, Little Street Kitchen. Town-centre café: Federal Diner on Helwick. Albert Town bakeries: Pembroke Pâtisserie and White Rabbit Cakes. Fridges move. Ask staff.

Pear by the lake. Cherry after a hot walk. Same four cans we make: Cherry, Mango, Pear, Strawberry.

If the rental has a kitchen

A 12-pack in the fridge is the Kiwi move — long weekend, school holidays, a house with cousins in it. Shop or Fridge Fill if you are sending boxes to a real address.

If the house is in Albert Town, Pembroke does click-and-collect pastries. White Rabbit is the cake and donut cart. A can from town still belongs in the fridge.

If you want a cocktail or a mocktail in a glass, that is Recipes. Those pages are for mixing. They are not a walking guide.

If you are going on

Queenstown is forty-five minutes to an hour back over the hill. A weekend in Queenstown is that stay. Honey soda for a South Island trip is the packing map for Milford, Abel Tasman, and the rest of the island — buy here before you leave.
